bmw 5 series - audi a5

Audi has embraced the hatckback concept and added a tailgate, a pair of rear doors, and some extra length to the A5 to create the sleek new Sportback. Measuring over 4.7 metres long and two metres wide, it has an impressive profile, although it pales in size comparison to the BMW 5 Series.

The BMW 5 Series is a little narrower than the A5, but it's bigger in every other respect. It carries much more road presence do to its size, and some thing its styling as well, however color and wheel choice make a big difference in looks for this particular model.

No matter the paint colour, the BMW 5 Series seems to have occasionally awkward proportions, appearing heavy-handed from some angles where the Audi A5 looks great all-round.

The quality of the A5's cabin is impressive, but it shares its dashboard with the A5 coupé and cabriolet, Causing it to lack the all-new appeal of the BMW 5 Series interior. There is  more leg and headroom in the back of the used Audi A5, but independently sliding rear seats in the BMW 5 Series provide more luxury than the Audi. When it comes to luggage space, the huge BMW does not fare as well as its large size would lead you to believe, at least with the rear seats in place. Fold them flat, however, and the BMW 5 Series has the biggest load area with 1,700 litres. Good dimensions overall for used cars in this category.

Both cars are powered by torquey 3.0-litre diesels. Performance is very similar too, but the way they behave is very different. The BMW is smooth, linear and undramatic, while the A5 feels much more urgent. This is de to the seven-speed S tronic twin-clutch transmission, which can be slow-witted compared to the super-smooth eight-speeder in the BMWb5 Series. While the quattro drivetrain ensures that the A5 is quicker off the line and has impressive mid-corner grip, the BMW 5 Series is better balanced and more rewarding to drive.

The BMW5 Series has a more engaging and accurate set-up, but low-speed ride comfort is lacking. The combination of its large alloy rims, narrow tyre sidewalls and unforgiving run-flat rubber causes every bump to rattle the occupants at low speeds. It's smoother at high speed, but this is still an irritation.
